Ingredients

1 cup granulated sugar

1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened

4 large eggs

1 cup whole milk

1 tablespoon vanilla extract

2 cups all-purpose flour

2 teaspoons baking powder

1/4 teaspoon salt

1 cup heavy cream

1/4 cup brown sugar (for topping)

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9-inch round cake pan.

Cream the Butter and Sugar: In a large mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.

Add Eggs and Vanilla: Beat in the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract.

Combine Dry Ingredients: In another bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.

Combine Mixtures: Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, alternating with the whole milk. Mix until just combined.

Bake the Cake: Pour the batter into the prepared cake pan. Bake for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Let the cake cool in the pan for 10 minutes before transferring it to a wire rack.

Prepare the Crème Brûlée Layer: In a saucepan, heat the heavy cream over medium heat until just simmering, then remove from heat.

Make the Custard: In a bowl, whisk together the egg yolks and brown sugar until smooth. Slowly drizzle the hot cream into the egg mixture while whisking continuously to temper the eggs.

Cool the Custard: Allow the custard mixture to cool slightly, then pour it over the cooled cake, smoothing it out evenly. Cover and refrigerate the cake for at least 2 hours, or until the custard is set.

Caramelize the Topping: Once the custard is set, sprinkle a layer of brown sugar evenly over the top. Using a kitchen torch, caramelize the sugar until it forms a crispy crust. If you don’t have a torch, place the cake under the broiler for a couple of minutes, keeping a close eye on it.

Serve and Enjoy: Let the cake sit for a few minutes before slicing and serving for the caramelized topping to harden slightly.
