12/4 cupmixed dried fruits (e.g., cranberries, apricots, and raisins)
12/4 cupchopped nuts (e.g., walnuts or pecans)
14 cuppowdered sugar (for icing)
11-2 tablespoonsmilk (for icing)
optionaledible gold dust for decoration
Instructions
In a small bowl, combine the warmed milk and sugar. Sprinkle the yeast on top and let it sit for about 5 minutes until frothy.
In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, and orange zest.
In another bowl, whisk together the melted butter and eggs. Add the yeast mixture to the egg and butter mixture and stir until combined.
Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, mixing until a dough forms.
Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for about 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour or until it has doubled in size.
Once risen, punch down the dough and fold in the dried fruits and chopped nuts.
Shape the dough into a round loaf or braid and place it on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Let it rise again for another 30 minutes.
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
Bake the bread for 25-30 minutes, or until golden brown and it sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.
While the bread is baking, mix the powdered sugar with 1-2 tablespoons of milk to create a smooth icing. Add more milk if needed for desired consistency.
Remove the bread from the oven and let it cool on a wire rack. Once cooled, drizzle the icing over the top and sprinkle with edible gold dust if using.
Notes
