Ingredients

1 cup all-purpose flour

1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder

1/2 teaspoon baking powder

1/2 teaspoon baking soda

1/4 teaspoon salt

1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened

1 cup granulated sugar

2 large eggs

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1/2 cup buttermilk

1 tablespoon red food coloring

1 cup cream cheese (for frosting)

1/4 cup powdered sugar (for frosting)

1 teaspoon vanilla extract (for frosting)

Optional: chocolate shavings or red sprinkles for garnish

Instructions

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a muffin tin with cupcake liners.

In a medium bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.

In a large bowl, beat the softened butter and granulated sugar together with an electric mixer until light and fluffy, about 3-5 minutes.

Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract.

In a separate bowl, mix the buttermilk and red food coloring until combined.

Gradually add the flour mixture to the butter mixture, alternating with the buttermilk mixture. Begin and end with the flour mixture. Mix just until combined; do not overmix.

For the marble effect, pour half of the cake batter into a separate bowl. Stir in a couple of tablespoons of cocoa powder to achieve a richer chocolate flavor in that half.

Begin to fill each cupcake liner by using a spoon to alternate between the red velvet batter and the chocolate batter, creating swirls. Use a toothpick or skewer to gently swirl the batters together to enhance the marbled look.

Bake for 18-20 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Allow the cupcakes to cool in the pan for 5 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.

While the cupcakes are cooling, prepare the cream cheese frosting: In a medium bowl, beat the cream cheese until smooth. Add the powdered sugar and vanilla extract, and mix until well combined with a smooth consistency.

Once the cupcakes are completely cool, pipe or spread the cream cheese frosting on top of each cupcake.

If desired, garnish with chocolate shavings or red sprinkles for a festive touch.
